Dear Phoenix Community

As the leaves begin to turn, September marked a season of fresh starts and strong connections here at Phoenix Education Centre. From launching new learning programmes to participating in awareness campaigns, this month has been a reminder of the power of education and community coming together. We’re proud to reflect on everything that’s been achieved and excited about what lies ahead.

Essential Skills Numeracy & Literacy Kick Off

Our Essential Skills courses in Numeracy and Literacy officially launched this September, and we’ve been delighted by the strong interest from learners of all ages. These classes are designed to strengthen everyday skills, whether it’s helping your child with homework, filling out forms, or improving job opportunities.

Learning is happening in a supportive, inclusive environment where everyone is encouraged to move at their own pace. Our tutors are already seeing great engagement, and we’re excited to watch this group grow in confidence and capability over the term.

New Book Exchange at the Phoenix Community Hub

We’re excited to introduce our new Book Exchange in the Phoenix Community Hub, a small idea with a big heart. The aim is simple: bring a book, take a book. No sign-ups, no fees, just the joy of sharing stories.

Whether you’re a fan of fiction, looking for something educational, or wanting to introduce your kids to new adventures, there’s something for everyone. This initiative is already sparking conversation and connection, and we hope it continues to grow into a vibrant part of our Hub life. If you have books to donate, please drop them by!

Level 1 British Sign Language (BSL) Course Begins

Our brand-new Level 1 BSL Course launched this month, giving participants the opportunity to build foundational skills in British Sign Language. This is more than just a language course, it’s a step toward building a more inclusive, communicative, and compassionate community.

The demand for this course highlights how many people in our community are eager to break down communication barriers and connect more deeply with Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals. We’re incredibly proud to host this training and look forward to seeing learners progress in fluency and confidence.

Staff Development: S.P.A.R.C Training at Ledley Hall Youth

At Phoenix, we know that strong communities are built on strong support systems — and that includes making sure our staff have the tools and training they need to thrive. This September, our team took part in S.P.A.R.C training (Supporting People And Rebuilding Communities) at Ledley Hall Youth Centre.

The training focused on trauma-informed approaches, youth engagement, and creating safe, supportive learning environments. It’s part of our ongoing commitment to professional development and to ensuring our staff are fully equipped to meet the evolving needs of our learners and community members.

Suicide Prevention Month: Raising Awareness

September is Suicide Prevention Month, and Phoenix joined organisations across the world in using our voice to help raise awareness and reduce stigma. Through dedicated social media posts, we shared vital information and signposted local mental health services.

We know that education and mental health are deeply connected, and we want our centre to be a safe space where difficult topics can be discussed openly and without judgement. Thank you to everyone who liked, shared, commented, and took part, together, we are building a more compassionate and connected community.

IFI Budgeting and Expenses Activity

This September, the IFI group took part in a fun and practical budgeting and expenses activity designed to build financial awareness and decision-making skills. Working in small teams, the young people were challenged to manage a mock monthly budget, tracking income and planning for various expenses such as rent, food, transport, and leisure, while also dealing with surprise costs along the way. The session encouraged thoughtful conversations about financial priorities and the realities of independent living. It was a valuable opportunity for the group to develop essential life skills in a supportive and engaging environment.

Craft Club Fun at Phoenix Education Centre NI

Our Craft Group for kids started this September at Phoenix Education Centre NI! It’s the perfect space for young creators to explore their imagination, learn new skills, and have loads of fun with friends. Each week, children enjoy hands-on activities like painting, cutting, sticking, and building their own masterpieces to take home. Whether they’re making seasonal decorations or trying out new art techniques, there’s always something exciting to look forward to. We can’t wait to see what our young artists will create next!
