Phoenix Education Centre NI - January 2026 Newsletter
January has been a busy and productive month across all areas of the centre. Our programmes have resumed with great enthusiasm following the festive break, with both new and returning learners engaging fully in their courses. There has been a noticeable sense of motivation in the learning, as participants set goals for the months ahead and commit to developing new skills.
Throughout the month, learners have been working towards a variety of accredited qualifications designed to enhance employability, build confidence, and support personal development. These include courses focused on vocational skills, wellbeing, and mental health awareness. Our tutors and mentors have played a key role in ensuring that each learner receives the guidance and encouragement they need, providing tailored support that reflects individual circumstances and aspirations.
In addition to formal learning, the centre has continued to provide a safe and welcoming space where individuals can build relationships, share experiences, and support one another. This sense of community is central to everything we do and has been especially evident as learners return after the holidays and reconnect with peers and staff.
Spotlight: Empowering Individuals Through Education
This month’s spotlight focuses on the heart of Phoenix Education Centre NI, its commitment to empowering individuals through education. We believe that education is not a one-size-fits-all journey, and our work is centred on meeting people where they are, recognising their potential, and supporting them to move forward at their own pace.
Many of our learners come to us having faced challenges within traditional education settings. At Phoenix, they are given the opportunity to re-engage in a way that is flexible, supportive, and responsive to their needs. By fostering a positive learning environment, we help individuals rebuild confidence in their abilities and rediscover a sense of purpose.
The progress we witness each day is a testament to the impact of this approach. Whether it is completing a qualification, gaining the confidence to speak in a group, or simply taking the first step back into education, every achievement matters. These successes highlight the importance of accessible, community-based education and the transformative effect it can have on individuals and families alike.
CEO Highlights - January 2026
January has been a highly productive and forward-focused month for our CEO, Emma Shaw, as she continues to strengthen partnerships, represent Phoenix Education Centre NI across key forums, and drive strategic development for the year ahead.
A significant portion of the month was dedicated to building and maintaining relationships with local organisations and schools. Emma met with local organisations from EBCDA as well as representatives from Ashfield Boys’ High School, Breda Academy, and Cregagh Primary School to explore how Phoenix can further support young people and families within the community. These conversations are vital in ensuring our services remain responsive, collaborative, and impactful.
Emma also played an active role in strategic planning and policy development. She participated in a Belfast City Council VCSE Panel planning day, contributed to the East Belfast Anti-Poverty Alliance through the Root Causes Subgroup as Chair, as well as being selected to serve on the Curriculum Review Panel by the Dept Of Education. These amazing opportunities and engagements ensure Phoenix continues to have a strong voice in shaping local education and support provision.
Supporting families and communities remains a core priority. Emma attended a Family Support Hub meeting and was involved in South & East Belfast Locality Planning, reinforcing Phoenix’s commitment to a joined-up, community-based approach to addressing need.
Internally, Emma supported the continued growth and quality of the organisation. This included overseeing the onboarding of new tutors and engaging with the Education and Training Inspectorate (ETI) in relation to the Ledley Hall inspection—an important step in maintaining high standards across our programmes.
The month also included opportunities to connect with wider initiatives and stakeholders. Emma met with Belfast Stories to discuss inclusive growth in the city, welcomed visits from funders, and contributed to project planning for RAISE initiatives. She also participated in consortium meetings, ensuring Phoenix remains an active and collaborative partner within the sector.
To round off a busy month, Emma attended the Eastside Awards alongside the Open University, celebrating achievements and recognising the positive work happening across the community.
Emma’s leadership throughout January reflects Phoenix Education Centre NI’s ongoing commitment to partnership, quality, and community impact as we move forward into 2026.
Community Corner
Community is at the core of Phoenix Education Centre NI, and January has been a month of strengthening those vital connections. Our centre continues to act as a hub where people can come together not only to learn, but also to feel supported and valued.
We have continued to engage with local residents and organisations, ensuring that our programmes reflect the needs of the community we serve. By maintaining strong partnerships and open communication, we are able to extend our reach and provide meaningful opportunities to those who may benefit most.
Within the centre, there has been a strong sense of togetherness as learners support one another in their journeys. From informal conversations to collaborative learning activities, these interactions help to build confidence, reduce isolation, and create a positive and encouraging atmosphere. It is this sense of belonging that makes Phoenix more than just a place of learning, it is a place where individuals can thrive.
Coming Up In February 2026
Looking ahead to February, we are excited to continue building on the momentum established in January. A range of programmes and activities are planned, offering both new and existing learners the opportunity to further develop their skills and explore new areas of interest.
We will be welcoming new participants to the centre, providing them with the same supportive introduction that has helped so many others begin their learning journeys. Our team is also preparing additional opportunities for engagement, ensuring that there are accessible pathways for individuals at different stages of their development.
As always, we encourage members of the community to stay connected with us through our website and social media channels, where updates on upcoming courses, events, and opportunities will be shared regularly. February promises to be another exciting and productive month for Phoenix Education Centre NI.
