What we've been up to in April 2025

Director Emma Shaw attended the launch of the Lost Futures report at Stormont at the beginning of the month. This vital research connects poverty, inequality, and suicidality in Northern Ireland and stresses that suicide prevention must be integrated into all policies. Emma Shaw was on the panel for speaking about the issues we face and how we can overcome these for the future.

Out and About, Building Skills

After three years of growth and connection, our Cregagh Group concluded their journey with a meaningful residential at Corrymeela. The experience allowed them to reflect on and build upon everything they’ve learned through leadership development, youth empowerment, and active citizenship. The group also enjoyed some well-deserved downtime at surf school, capping off a day of fun-filled activities with a shared meal to celebrate their achievements.

Our Clonduff Group took part in a meaningful day trip designed to strengthen their teamwork, active citizenship, and peacebuilding skills.

Step Up For Change Take Dublin Zoo

Step Up For Change participants took advantage of the early April sunshine with a trip to Dublin Zoo. The group enjoyed exploring the zoo’s many exhibits, from watching the playful sea lions to visiting the majestic elephants. The day out was a great opportunity to relax, connect with one another, and appreciate the beauty of nature in one of Dublin’s most iconic attractions. Spirits were high, and the sunshine made it a perfect day for making memories together.

MLA Gavin Robinson

We were visited by Gavin Robinson this month to see all the work we’ve been getting up to!

Keeping the Body and Mind Active

Between learning sessions, we make it a priority to get participants up and moving. Physical activity not only boosts overall health but also helps sharpen focus and stimulate the brain. We believe that a bit of friendly competition goes a long way in building confidence and camaraderie among young people. By staying active, we help ensure they’re energised and ready to engage fully in the week’s learning.

Easter Revision Camp

Each exam season, we’re proud to run our Easter Revision Camp—providing young people with a quiet, focused space away from the distractions of daily life to prepare for their GCSEs and A-Levels. A huge thank you to all the students who showed such dedication throughout the week. We’re wishing you the very best of luck—go smash those exams!

Visit From Chris Quinn from NICCY

We were incredibly grateful to welcome Chris Quinn from NICCY this month for a powerful conversation with our young people.

Chris shared: ‘Ken and I were deeply moved by the powerful impact of their voices and opinions. Their passion, honesty, and insight highlighted the urgent need to listen more closely to young people’s experiences and ideas.’

At Phoenix Education Centre, community voice is at the heart of everything we do. We’re committed to ensuring young people are not only heard, but genuinely listened to, in a space where their perspectives are truly valued.
